2025 FAN Scholarship Essay by Addyson Trimbell

I started playing field hockey at eight years old and since then I have spent a majority of my time improving my field hockey techniques and skills, practicing, and challenging myself during workouts.

But, my dedication and discipline have greatly influenced my academic performance and goals in life, not only in field hockey. It has not been easy to balance tough workouts and strenuous practices while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and eventually becoming the salutatorian of my class.

Many people have asked me how I do it and it truly is not just about time management, a strong and dedicated mindset is necessary to succeed, which has spread across all aspects of my life.

Field hockey has shown me how important being part of a team, focusing, and being resilient is. When I go to practice, my teammates and I joke around and laugh, but we also continuously encourage one another to get better.

Hard work and devotion are necessary to achieve the thrill of winning a game, celebrating a goal, and being the first person to cross the finish line in a sprint. These friendships benefit my academic life in addition to strengthening bonds within a team.

Having spent so much time in a team, I've learned how to collaborate with others and ask for help when I need it. The discipline I have created for myself through working out daily and practicing has created a strong work ethic that has shown in my studies.

I am certain that I can write a challenging essay or study difficult material if I can get up at five in the morning before school to workout. I've been able to prioritize my work, manage my time, and do well in my classes due to this approach.

Now, passing an exam with a high score is nearly as satisfying as winning a game.

This has not always been an easy road though. Many days I have found myself struggling trying to balance field hockey with my academics. But these are the moments that show how much I have grown to adapt and overcome these situations.

I specifically remember one day when I struggled on my first AP Biology test. My teammates noticed a problem as I was getting ready for practice. They reminded me that we are all here to support one another after I informed them what had happened.

Soon after, there was an abundance of laughter on the field. In addition to being something I enjoy playing, field hockey serves as an escape for me when I'm feeling stressed.

My character and aspirations for the future have been influenced by my experiences as an athlete. Fortunately, playing field hockey has given me the perseverance, self-control, and teamwork I need to succeed as a physical therapist.

I am eager to see what the future holds for me because I am confident that I will face any challenge head-on with tenacity and fortitude.
