Christopher Newport field hockey jump two spots in DIII coaches poll, earn standout accolades in week one: NFHCA

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association published its DIII poll on Tuesday.

A major upset and a career win milestone have marked the start of the Division III field hockey season.

Williams College, previously ranked No. 4, stunned No. 2 Tufts University with a 3-1 victory. Despite the win, the Ephs dropped to No. 5 in the rankings, while the Jumbos fell to No. 7.

Christopher Newport’s head coach Carrie Moura notched her 300th career win with a victory over Washington & Lee. In her 22nd season leading the Captains, Moura became the 47th field hockey coach in NCAA history to reach this milestone.

The Captains climbed from No. 6 to No. 4 in this week’s poll.

Four teams rose five spots from their preseason rankings. Bowdoin now sits at No. 19, Ursinus at No. 13, Amherst at No. 11, and Rowan at No. 9.

Franklin & Marshall College, previously unranked, secures the No. 16 rank. Hamilton College and Stevens Institute of Technology are other unranked teams that are now on the poll.

No. 10 Wesleyan University, up from No. 13, has started the season strong with two consecutive shutout victories.

According to the NFHCA, the poll is voted on by designated NFHCA member coaches from each conference and has no bearing on selection to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship.
