Conference weekend matchups face tests in NCAA Division I field hockey’s postseason push

The NCAA Division I postseason is still unclear as more intense matchups are schedule this weekend.

Maryland is back at No. 1 for the first time since September 2022, with home games against Michigan State and Ohio State this weekend as the unbeaten Terrapins look to hold the top spot in NCAA Division I field hockey.

Statement wins by Princeton and Liberty last weekend have shaken up the national picture, with four weeks remaining in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll.

Indiana hosts No. 2 Northwestern on Friday, Louisville faces No. 8 Duke on Saturday, and Virginia and North Carolina each play twice in a weekend that could reshape conference standings and postseason positions.

For teams chasing Maryland and Northwestern, the stakes extend beyond the rankings: this weekend offers opportunities to add wins that could affect selection to the NCAA tournament.

Friday: No. 2 Northwestern at No. 11 Indiana, 3 p.m. This is the weekend’s clearest opportunity for a contender to make a major upward move. Indiana is 9-3 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten right behind the Wildcats, but its No. 17 RPI trails its poll ranking. A win over the RPI’s No. 2 team would improve the Hoosiers’ outlook and tighten the conference race. Northwestern, 4-0 in league play, is trying to keep its conference record intact before hosting Maryland on Oct. 22.

Friday: No. 14 Liberty at Providence, 2 p.m. Both teams enter 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the Big East, behind 4-0 UConn. Liberty has the stronger RPI position, 16th compared with Providence’s 28th, but the immediate conference stakes are shared: the winner moves to 3-1 and the loser to 2-2. For Liberty, the challenge is to turn the North Carolina upset breakthrough into sustained progress. For Providence, this is a chance to gain ground in the league while adding a nationally relevant win.

Friday: No. 19 Virginia at No. 6 Wake Forest, 6 p.m.; Sunday: No. 20 Monmouth at Virginia, noon. Virginia has two chances to change the direction of its season. Wake Forest is looking to build on its California sweep and protect its position near the top of the ACC; Monmouth carries an 8-3 record and a No. 24 RPI into the weekend. For Virginia, two wins would be a timely boost. Two losses would leave the Cavaliers 6-7, with substantially less room for error.

Saturday: No. 8 Duke at No. 16 Louisville, 1 p.m. Duke brings a 10-3 record and a 5-1 ACC mark; Louisville is 9-5 and 3-2 in the conference. The RPI gap — Duke eighth, Louisville 21st — makes the potential payoff particularly significant for the Cardinals. Duke can reinforce its position near the top of the league, while Louisville can add a high-value result after last week’s loss at Syracuse.

Friday: Boston College at No. 10 North Carolina, 6 p.m.; Sunday: No. 13 Syracuse at North Carolina, 2 p.m. UNC’s home stand could be a turning point. Boston College arrives after beating Virginia, and Syracuse already has a win over Louisville from last weekend. For the Tar Heels, a sweep would move them to 9–5 and strengthen their ACC position; two losses would leave them 7–7. Sunday’s matchup also gives Syracuse a direct opportunity against the team immediately ahead of Liberty in RPI. That game airs on ACC Network.
