Late-season shakeups put Virginia and Penn State in the spotlight: NFHCA Week 8 poll
Something is clicking across NCAA Division I field hockey: new leadership is finding its rhythm, fresh faces are stepping into the spotlight, and seasoned players are adding a sense of calm that carry teams into a postseason run.
The National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I poll is published every Tuesday throughout the college field hockey season. With the latest Division I weekend upsets, the poll doesn’t look anything like it did in the August preseason poll.
Penn State, which hosted two Big Ten Conference home games this past weekend, has become the clearest example in Hannah Prince’s first season, beating unranked Ohio State 4-3 in a shootout before knocking off No. 18 Michigan 2-1.
The No. 19 Virginia Cavaliers have also found their own spark from first-year forward Caitlin Connell, whose overtime goal delivered a 1-0 win at No. 6 Wake Forest, then leaned on its broader core to outlast No. 20 Monmouth 4-3.
Rutgers added another jolt to Michigan, beating them 3-2 in overtime, leaving the Wolverines with two losses in one weekend.
Maryland has retained its No. 1 spot, followed by Northwestern, UConn, Massachusetts and Harvard.
Virginia’s surge made the Cavaliers the clearest candidate for a significant jump, while Penn State’s seven-game winning streak and back-to-back Big Ten victories put an unranked team back in the national conversation.
Among the teams climbing, UConn, Massachusetts and Harvard continue to look built for the final stretch.
Each entered the week with one loss and each handled business convincingly: UConn swept Georgetown and Cornell without allowing a goal, Massachusetts overwhelmed Ball State and Bellarmine by a combined 18-1 score, and Harvard followed an Ivy League win at Brown with a 5-1 victory over Boston University.
Lafayette also kept pressing its case, scoring 17 goals combined across two shutout wins — Lehigh and William & Mary — to reach 13-2.
The teams peaking at the right time are not limited to the poll’s biggest movers.
Maryland remained unbeaten with consecutive 4-0 Big Ten wins, Northwestern responded to its first loss by handling Indiana, and North Carolina steadied itself with wins over Boston College and Syracuse.
According to the NFHCA, “the poll is intended to provide a weekly snapshot of the nation’s top-performing programs based on results, strength of competition, and insight from the sport’s coaching community. Beginning after the second week of regular-season competition, teams must maintain a .500 record or better to be eligible for ranking consideration.
“These rankings reflect the collective assessment of the designated voting coaches each week and are designed to spotlight performance on a national scale. The Coaches Polls are independent of the NCAA Championship selection process and are not intended to predict or determine postseason qualification or seeding.”
