Louisville field hockey upsets No. 14 Ohio State in Kentucky: Louisville 3, Ohio State 2
With matching 3-3 records, the Louisville and No. 14 Ohio State field hockey teams battled in Kentucky on Friday.
In the end, the Cardinals edged the Buckeyes 3-2.
It’s the third straight top-15 competition that the Cardinals have had within a week. Louisville is 1-2 against top teams. The Cardinals dropped their game against No. 1 Northwestern 2-1 in overtime and 5-1 to then-ranked No. 15 Iowa.
"I was a little bit nervous in the front end of the game, because putting together consistent performances has been one of our challenges this season," Louisville head coach Justine Sowry said in a statement. "Our team took control today, and I'm very proud of them, their effort, their smarts. Ohio State is a very good team, they pressed us very well and played fast."
Here’s a quick recap of the game's highlights:
First Goal: Trijntje Herfkens assisted Rylie Wollerton, who scored her sixth goal of the season.
Second Goal: Gracie Potter scored on a rebound during a penalty corner, making it 2-0.
Ohio State Responds: Autumn Kernechel assisted Makenna Webster, putting Ohio State on the board before halftime, making the score 2-1.
Cardinals Extend Lead: Gigi Edwards scored, extending Louisville's lead to 3-1.
Buckeyes' Late Push: Sienna Golden scored with 3:28 remaining, bringing the score to 3-2.
Louisville outshot Ohio State 17-15, with a 10-8 edge in shots on goal and a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Emily Young made four saves, and Emily Eaton and Chloe Cuzzupe contributed with defensive saves. Ohio State's Maddie Steven had seven stops.
"We were able to handle the speed at which they were playing and we just got a little bit of momentum as the game went on,” Sowry said. “It always helps when you can score early in the game - overall I'm ecstatic that this team earned a win. Plenty of lessons to take away from a game management standpoint and when teams take their goalkeeper out as well so a lot to learn, but a great game overall."
