LSU uses physical play to dethrone Oklahoma in SEC crown showdown: women’s basketball
The LSU Tigers are firm in the paint and unafraid to pressure opponents in situations that force the referee to blow the whistle.
LSU has moved up and down the NCAA Net Rankings all season, but in big games against Southeastern Conference foes, and Big10 competitors, they stand out for their physical play.
The Tigers move into the SEC semifinals Friday after plundering Oklahoma 112-78.
Although LSU collectively as a team earned 26 personal fouls, they also forced 27 fouls out of the Sooners. Their aggressiveness gave them momentum.
Following a recent win over Tennessee, LSU Head Coach Kim Mulkey said in a press conference “just be physical.”
The longtime coach is known for encouraging her team to create intensity in their play by ignoring outside shots and driving straight into the defense, forcing an opponents’ defense to collapse.
The mindset forced a formerly strong Oklahoma team to struggle, losing by a deficit of over 20 points, due to a complete loss of momentum and breakdown on the defensive side of the court.
LSU earned their 14th win over the 100-point mark this season, only one away from a season record, and are the team to beat going into the semifinals of the SEC tournament tomorrow.
