NCAA Division II field hockey weekend brings top-10 showdowns and conference stakes
NCAA Division II field hockey fans can look forward to a loaded Saturday slate on Oct. 10, led by four games singled out nationally as matchups to watch.
The action begins at 11 a.m. ET and features contenders from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and Northeast-10, with unbeaten teams, rematches and early conference positioning all in play.
No. 1 Kutztown at No. 7 Slippery Rock
The weekend’s first headline matchup sends top-ranked Kutztown to Slippery Rock.
The Golden Bears have opened the season 11-0, including a 2-0 start in PSAC play, and have already collected shutout victories over ranked opponents Shippensburg and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Slippery Rock brings an 8-1 record and a perfect 4-0 home mark, giving the Golden Bears a difficult road test against a team trying to rebound from its first loss. Fans should expect a contrast between Kutztown’s sustained control and Slippery Rock’s speed.
No. 4 Shippensburg vs No. 6 Bloomsburg
At the same 11 a.m. ET window, Bloomsburg visits Shippensburg in another PSAC top-10 clash. Bloomsburg enters 9-1 and 2-0 in conference play after a 1-0 shutout of then-No. 5 West Chester on Wednesday. That result adds urgency to a matchup with Shippensburg, the defending Division II champion and the No. 4 team in this week’s poll.
With little separating the league’s leading programs, circle play, clean defensive exits and the ability to finish a limited number of chances could decide this one.
Pace vs No. 10 Assumption
The Northeast-10 race gets a revealing checkpoint at noon ET when Pace hosts No. 10 Assumption. Pace has built an 8-3 record behind an offense averaging four goals per game, while Assumption arrives 6-3 on a five-game winning streak and 2-0 in league play.
The Greyhounds have allowed only one goal through their first two conference games, setting up a compelling test between Pace’s attacking volume and Assumption’s recent defensive form.
No. 2 East Stroudsburg vs No. 5 West Chester
Saturday’s games peak at 1 p.m. ET when East Stroudsburg hosts West Chester.
The Warriors are 8-1 and unbeaten in two PSAC games, but their only loss came at West Chester, 2-1, on Sept. 22 in a nonconference meeting. West Chester is 7-2 and trying to answer Wednesday’s narrow 1-0 loss at Bloomsburg.
The rematch offers East Stroudsburg a chance to reverse the earlier result on its home field, while the Golden Rams can prove the first victory was no one-off.
What else to watch
Beyond these four games, Saturday includes 10 additional Division II contests, while Sunday brings Millersville at No. 8 IUP at noon ET and Frostburg State against Roberts Wesleyan at Mansfield at 1 p.m. ET.
Friday’s lone game has Southern Connecticut State visiting No. 9 Saint Anselm at 4 p.m. ET.
Together, the weekend should clarify the PSAC chase, test the NE10’s early leaders and give fans a better sense of which teams are ready to carry October momentum toward the postseason.
