Penn State field hockey scores twice in second half to shut out Villanova
Penn State field hockey spent the first half of Friday’s game against Villanova searching for a spark, then found it after halftime as the Nittany Lions turned a tense matchup into a 2-0 win at Char Morett-Curtiss Field.
For two quarters, a goal was coming — but nobody knew when.
Every time Penn State crossed midfield, the crowd picked up, only for Villanova to pack the circle, clear the ball and make the Lions build again.
The first half ended scoreless, but Penn State came out of the break with more urgency and eventually a score. The 2-0 win moved the Nittany Lions to 2-1, matching Villanova’s record.
The change came in the third. Penn State moved the ball quicker, pressed with more purpose and started forcing Villanova to defend deeper than it had in the first half.
At 42:07, that pressure finally turned into the moment Penn State needed.
On Penn State’s second penalty corner of the third quarter, Ella Gaitan sent the initial shot on goal.
Villanova goalkeeper Maddi Sears made the save, but the rebound stayed alive. Sienna Dunn redirected it toward the turf, and senior captain Natalie Freeman ran into the right place in front of the cage to punch it in.
Penn State led 1-0.
Villanova pushed back late in the third quarter and earned a corner of its own, but Penn State’s defense slammed the door. Cooper Cutchins came up with a clutch block, and goalkeeper Aby Deverka remained calm behind the back line, reading the danger before it could turn into something louder.
When asked about pressure, Deverka explained “I felt a bit of pressure but I felt confident in the team's ability to stay with it.”
Penn State was protecting a one-goal lead in the fourth, while Villanova was throwing numbers forward. The Nittany Lions had to manage three second-half green cards to Joji Purdy, Lilly Holmes and Dunn.
Villanova made that pressure count, firing six shots.
Deverka handled everything that reached the cage, finishing with four saves on four shots on goal.
At the 55-minute mark, Penn State finally gave the crowd room to breathe.
Freeman inserted the corner, Lara Pyle stopped it cleanly, and Purdy hammered in her third goal of the season.
That made it 2-0. Villanova kept coming until the final whistle, but Penn State shut down their attack.
Penn State outshot Villanova 13-10 and held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners to earn the 2-0 shutout.
Head coach Hannah Prince said her third quarter tweak, “changing our press at halftime” allowed the team “to have a little more counterattack space. And connecting in that counterattack space.”
Penn State host Delaware on Sunday at noon. Villanova plays New Haven at Ursinus the same day at 12 p.m.
