U.S. Women’s roster for New Zealand series announced: USA Field Hockey
With only two more weeks to go until the second Cathy Bessant International Series, the U.S. women’s head field hockey coach announced Thursday the roster of athletes who will compete in early July.
The 24-athletes have been picked to play against New Zealand. The two FIH-sanctioned matches are set for July 5-6. Both games start at 10 a.m. and are being held at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte.
“Following the success of the first series against Ireland, I am excited for the team to return to the pitch against a quality opponent,” head coach David Passmore said in a statement.
The United Eagles competed against Ireland at home the weekend of June 7-8. They tied 1-1 in game one, and won 4-0 in game two.
The No. 10 Black Sticks are no strangers to the No. 14 United Eagles. Passmore said he thinks New Zealand has “improved” their game and noted that the US squad has also “changed some aspects” of their game.
Having added a handful of younger athletes to the roster, he added that “it should be an exciting and interesting series.”
“This will be the final opportunity to evaluate the athletes and select the competing team for the 2025 Pan American Cup in July,” Passmore said.
For each sanctioned match the competing squad will be narrowed to 18 athletes, according to USA Field Hockey.
