USWNT tie Argentina 1-1 in opening game at 2026 FIH World Cup

USA Field Hockey opened its return to the FIH World Cup with a 1-1 draw against No. 2 Argentina. 

The No. 11 United Eagles and No. 2 Las Leonas each earned one point in pool play. The U.S. will face Scotland next. 

Against Argentina, the U.S. came back from a 1-0 deficit in the second quarter.

Maddie Zimmer sparked the U.S. attack with her signature baseline run, sending the ball across the mouth of goal. Three red-shirted Americans crashed the cage, and Emma DeBerdine delivered the finishing touch. 

Reese D’Ariano made an early impact against the polished, powerful Argentinians inside the opening three minutes earning the first attack penalty corner of the match.

USA used long aerials to bypass Argentina’s midfield through the first three quarters before the Americans shifted to a more ground-based attack in the fourth. 

The Americans were especially strong on defensive penalty corners, keeping Argentina off the board on all of those chances. Both goals in the match came from the field of play. 

Two cards were issued in the match: one the USA and one to Argentina. 

Claire Danahy was awarded ‘Player of the Match.’

Up Next  

USA are competing in Pool B with Argentina, Germany and Scotland. The Americans return to action Monday, Aug. 17, against Scotland at Belfius Hockey Arena in Belgium.

Game time in the United States is 5 a.m. EST. Scotland opened the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Germany.
