Bulldogs vs. Falcons: Class AAA District 3 title on the line

Wilson and Lower Dauphin have a habit of making championship day last a little longer.

Saturday brings another chance to see whether this rivalry needs bonus hockey — or whether someone can settle the gold-medal business before overtime.

The Bulldogs and Falcons meet November 7 at 3 p.m. at Soldiers and Sailors Stadium in Mechanicsburg for the District 3 Class AAA field hockey championship.

Wilson is trying to achieve its first district title, while Lower Dauphin brings a championship tradition to a matchup that has previously decided both district and state crowns.

Their roads to Saturday could hardly look more different.

Lower Dauphin overwhelmed Governor Mifflin 8–0 and Penn Manor 7–0. Wilson worked through consecutive 2–1 victories over Manheim Township and Cumberland Valley.

One finalist has been piling up goals; the other has been proving it can handle a tight finish.

For Wilson, junior Sydney Adams is a name to circle: she leads the team’s published statistics with 28 goals. Senior Sidni Templeton has 16 assists, while Abby Zerbe and sophomore Bradley Smith supplied the semifinal goals against Cumberland Valley.

Adams and Templeton assisted, and goalkeeper Natalie Rapp made four saves.

Lower Dauphin seniors Chase Strohm and Lily Rost are standouts in their own right, recently featured for their places in the Falcons’ record books. With Lower Dauphin arriving off back-to-back shutouts, Wilson’s challenge is not simply to slow the attack — it’s to find a way through at the other end.

Their championship history offers plenty of reason to expect drama.

In the 2022 district final, Wilson’s Emma Staron converted a penalty stroke with just four seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Lower Dauphin answered with Katelyn Strawser’s winner, securing a 3–2 victory and leaving the Bulldogs on the wrong end of a breathless finish.

Two weeks later, they did it all again with a state championship on the line.

Lower Dauphin won 3–2 in overtime, this time on Avery Pollock’s game-winner. Different stage, same score — and another reminder that these teams have made a habit of stretching championship afternoons beyond regulation.

Wilson knows the rivalry can swing the other way, too.

In 2019, the Bulldogs lost to Lower Dauphin in the district final, then turned around and beat the Falcons in a shootout for the state title. One meeting didn’t write the whole November story then, and Saturday gives both programs another chance to write their own ending.
