No. 14 U.S. women’s field hockey vs No. 10 New Zealand at UNC-Charlotte: Game 2 livestream and tickets
This weekend, Pennsylvania field hockey talent was a formidable presence in the first of a two-game series featuring the U.S. Women's Field Hockey Team versus New Zealand.
The second game in the Cathy Bessant International Test Match Series begins at 10 a.m. at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte.
Recent Penn State graduate Phia Gladieux (Oley Valley) was the first to score in the 3-0 shutout. She sent a powerful reverse lift into the cage through a crowd of Black Sticks defenders, lifting it high enough for the score.
Next up was Michigan’s Abby Tamer, who was recognized as Player of the Match. She entered the circle on the left side, went to the baseline, eliminated a defender, paused for a look at the cage, and found the space to make it 2-0.
Rising star Reese D’Ariano (West Chester) capitalized on an empty cage for a quick goal following Tamer’s, as New Zealand opted to add another field player instead of having a keeper in the cage.
In the U.S. cage, Jenny Rizzo (also a Penn State graduate from Hershey) handled pressure with a strong backfield. This marks Rizzo’s second shutout in the two sets of FIH-sanctioned Test Match series, as she also recorded a shutout against Ireland in June.
The Black Sticks’ Nina Murphy made her debut in Charlotte. New Zealand will have competed with the U.S. in five matches, two of which are the FIH-sanctioned Test Matches.
