US Women’s Field Hockey finish with silver in 3-0 loss to Argentina in 2025 Pan American Cup title game
Argentina's women's team has won the 2025 Pan American Cup title for the seventh consecutive time.
The US Women’s National Field Hockey team played a strong game against Argentina in the championship on Sunday evening in Montevideo, Uruguay. Although they ultimately fell 3-0 to the No. 2 outdoor ranked team in the world, the No. 12 United Eagles still earned a silver medal.
While the current U.S. roster may not have the same international experience as the Argentine women, who notably won bronze in the 2024 Paris Olympic games, Team USA created a handful of opportunities throughout the match.
Ball possession was nearly split, with Argentina at 55 percent and the USA at 45 percent, according to USA Field Hockey.
The Las Leonas started strong, scoring their opening goal within the first five minutes off an attack penalty corner. However, Team USA held their structure and played organized defense, preventing any further goals in the first half.
In the second half, the experience of Argentine players like Maria Granatto, Rocio Sanchez, Valentina Raposo, and Agustina Gorzelany emerged. They applied consistent pressure on both offense and defense, making it difficult for the States to score, and they were continuously effective at getting shots on goal in a crowded circle.
The States’ Jenny Rizzo had an impressive performance in goal, blocking 10 Argentine shots despite the three goals allowed. Meredith Sholder and Caroline Ramsey also played a hard-fought defensive game, setting up the US’s offensive momentum and even forcing the Argentinians to overcommit at times, which highlighted Team USA's developing passing game.
Both the Argentine and USA women's teams have successfully qualified for the 2026 FIH World Cup, as the top two women's teams from the Pan Am Cups earned spots.
On the men’s side, the US Men’s National Team lost 10-0 to the Argentines, who also captured gold and have qualified for the 2026 FIH World Cup. The Wolves also won silver medals, however, the men’s US team did not qualify for next year’s World Cup at the Pan Am Cup tournament.
