Christopher Newport boasts one of the best goalies in the country; Captains rank No. 2 in week two poll: NFHCA
The Middlebury field hockey teams sits atop the week two Division III National Field Hockey Coaches Association, while Christopher Newport climbed two spots to No. 2.
The composite ranking was published Tuesday by the coaches association.
The Captain’s goalkeeper, captain Lily Kerr, collected her 50th career win, becoming just the 42nd goalie in Division III history to reach the milestone, and only the 13th to do so with fewer than 10 losses.
Johns Hopkins made a big jump back into the top three after dropping to No. 6 last week.
The Blue Jays earned the move with a dramatic 2-1 victory over then No. 2 Salisbury, finished off by Grace Waldeck’s game-winning goal with 59.6 seconds remaining. Salisbury now sits at No. 4.
Williams (No. 5), Tufts (No. 7), Bates (No. 8), and York (No. 14) all remain in their same positions.
Tufts’ Hannah Biccard tied the program record for goals in a game, scoring five in an 8-0 win over Colby. Meanwhile, Bates has opened the season 5-0 for the first time since 1983, when the Bobcats started 7-0-2.
Further down the poll, Amherst (No. 9), Shenandoah (No. 10), Ursinus (No. 11), and Franklin & Marshall (No. 14) each moved up two spots, while Rowan fell three to No. 12.
The top climbers this week were Stevens, who jumped nine places to No. 16 after being ranked No. 25, and Hamilton, who climbed six spots to No. 18.
Two new programs join the poll, Endicott at No. 24 and Dickinson at No. 25.
