Pan American Cups women’s semifinal: USA vs Uruguay
The United States Women's Field Hockey team has officially secured their spot in the 2025 Pan American Cups semifinals.
They are set to face the host nation, Uruguay, in what promises to be an exciting match. Historically, the States have a perfect record against Uruguay, winning all five of their previous contests.
The semifinal game is scheduled for tonight, Friday, August 1, at 7:30 p.m. EST.
How did they do it?
The United Eagles dominated their way through the earlier rounds, starting with a commanding 10-0 victory over Mexico. Two days later, they faced a tougher challenge against No. 12 ranked Chile but still emerged victorious with a 5-2 win.
The States were able to convert on both penalty corners and field goals. Following these impressive performances, the FIH currently ranks Team USA at No. 12. The Uruguay outdoor ranking is No. 19.
The Pan American Cups – for men and women – are an international field hockey competition organized by the Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF), with the women's tournament beginning in 2001.
Looking ahead, the winners of the 2025 Pan American Cups will earn an automatic berth to the 2026 FIH World Cup, which will be held in Belgium and the Netherlands. The FIH World Cup was established in 1974.
Historically, the US women’s teams have finished fourth in the 2014 FIH World Cup in The Hague, Netherlands, and won bronze in the 1994 FIH World Cup in Dublin, Ireland.
Defending champions
Argentina won the Pan American Cup six times. They won in 2022 in Santiago, Chile, and have also won in 2017 (Lancaster, USA), 2013 (Mendoza, Argentina), and 2009 (Hamilton, Bermuda).
No. 2 Argentina beat No. 14 Chile 2-0 in the other pool semifinal and will be playing in the championship. They have qualified for the 2026 FIH World Cup.
The winner of USA vs Uruguay will also qualify for next year’s World Cup.
