Top 20 shake-up: NFHCA Division I poll sees movement as powerhouse programs rise and fall

Indiana, Duke, and Maryland are holding steady in the Week five National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll.

Three teams remain undefeated in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll, but the teams behind them show that the fight for placement is tightening as conference play gathers momentum. 

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I poll is released every Tuesday during the fall season. 

In the Week 5 poll, two-time defending champion Northwestern remains the unanimous No. 1 at 10-0. The Wildcats have beaten ranked opponents Duke, Louisville, Miami and most recently California, then opened Big Ten play with a 6-0 rout of Michigan State —their seventh shutout of the season. 

The No. 2 Maryland Terps are 9-0 after a 3-0 win over Rutgers, powered by a defense that has allowed only four goals and posted six shutouts.

Massachusetts, also 10-0, moved into a tie for No. 3 after a 3-0 victory at Central Michigan. The Minutewomen are off to their best start since 1992 and have outscored opponents 46-5, including 25-0 over their past five games. 

Duke, previously ranked No. 5, delivered the week’s most dramatic win with a 3-2 overtime comeback at then-No. 3 Wake Forest. After trailing 2-0 through three quarters, the Blue Devils scored twice in the final 15 minutes of regulation to force overtime. 

Sophomore Juliette Schulten scored the winner 13 minutes, 18 seconds into overtime.

Duke followed with a 1-0 shutout of Boston College, extending its winning streak to five games and improving to 3-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

The timing of the win could be pivotal, as the Blue Devils have five more conference games and they are currently sitting at the top of the ACC leaderboard.  

North Carolina re-entered the rankings at No. 12 after a 4-0 road win over then-No. 17 California and 8-1 victory over Stanford, which improved the Tar Heels to 5-4. 

Indiana made the week’s biggest climb, rising five spots to No. 13. The Hoosiers followed an earlier 3-1 victory at then-No. 2 Iowa with a 1-0 shutout of then-No. 13 Michigan. 

Louisville made the sharpest fall, dropping four places to No. 16 after splitting its West Coast trip: the Cardinals beat then-No. 17 California, 3-2 in overtime, before losing 1-0 to UC Davis.

North Carolina and 8-1 Lafayette both returned to the Top 20. 

According to the NFHCA, “the poll is intended to provide a weekly snapshot of the nation’s top-performing programs based on results, strength of competition, and insight from the sport’s coaching community. Beginning after the second week of regular-season competition, teams must maintain a .500 record or better to be eligible for ranking consideration.  

“These rankings reflect the collective assessment of the designated voting coaches each week and are designed to spotlight performance on a national scale. The Coaches Polls are independent of the NCAA Championship selection process and are not intended to predict or determine postseason qualification or seeding.”
